MODERN, TRADITIONAL OR CUSTOM HOUSE DESIGN??

In today’s world, where the climate is constantly changing, it is important for our living spaces to be designed in a way that is climate responsive. This means that we can enjoy a comfortable and relaxing indoor environment, no matter what the weather is like outside.

Traditional houses were built with this in mind, and modern spaces can achieve the same effect, but often at a higher cost. While traditional design architecture is an attractive option, it comes with certain limitations, such as difficulty in obtaining materials, Labour Intensive and high costs of craftsmanship.

On the other hand, modern design architecture may be more expensive and less sustainable.

To resolve this issue, a combination of modern and traditional design architecture can be employed.

This combination would be a custom-made design tailored to the local weather conditions, availability of materials, cost-effectiveness, required workforce type, and availability.

Here are some suggestions to incorporate to create comfortable living spaces.

  • Concrete essentially absorbs a lot of heat from surroundings and therefore increases the indoor temperature. Therefore, one basic approach should be to cut down on it where it is not essentially needed.
    1. Like using Lime Mortar for Plastering works and non-load bearing architectural walls.
    2. Constructing filler slabs instead of normal slabs where earthen clay is used as filler.
    3. Instead of installing cement- Rcc, GRC jaali use terracotta clay jaalis.
  • Essentially thick walls avoids over heating of interior spaces. So it is advisable to have thick outer walls or even using stones for architectural walls with high ventilations over the wall.
  • Installing wind screens in large balcony openings also helps avoiding excessive heating and also channels cool breeze inside. Wind screens can be created using clay bricks or even terracotta clay tiles.
  • Having high ceilings in common living spaces is ideal to avoid the need for energy extensive and expensive air conditioning usage.
  • To maintain a comfortable temperature in your space, it’s a great idea to create small ventilations or openings around the area, along with a large central high opening.
  • This design allows cool air to enter and channel hot air towards the large opening, resulting in continuous air circulation that keeps the temperature near room temperature. Not only does this enhance your comfort, but it also allows you to stay connected to the weather outside, whether it’s the refreshing cool autumn breeze or the earthy scent of the monsoon air.
